Since I try to mix in both my own personal amateur radio activities along with educational content, I would like to keep my blog posts as valuable a year or two from now as they might be to someone today. I discovered Ham Radio Deluxe back in the late summer, early fall timeframe of I had just earned my ticket and a colleague of mine had been using it for a few months and said you gotta get this software.

He told me about the logbook features and then said…. I downloaded and installed the software and got my Yaesu FTD connected without any issues. It was this software which I used to log my very first ham radio contact into as well as what I used for those incredible digital modes like PSK I seem to remember many software updates were made available and each time things always seemed to get better and better.

Starting sometime inI would make the occasional donation to the developer of HRD. I do use other logging software titles for specific contests and then import the contacts afterwards into my HRD logbook. Anyway, while visiting QRZ I will read some of the news items on the main page.

I dare not go any deeper into the depths of the QRZ forums for risk of being pulled into the dark side. Otherwise, you might read a lot of negativity as our fellow hams begin to comment on what ever the news item is about. I drilled into the thread to learn while development would continue on HRD, it would be done by different individuals and that Simon had sold the rights to HRD to those individuals. At this time the thread only had about 3 pages of comments. Today I believe there are over 10 pages.

What we know at the present time is more of less what is covered in the first few pages of the thread.

Executive Summary

Ham Radio Deluxe was sold and it will continue to be developed and supported. But this really is only my impression. First the sad feeling. This spirit is what makes the hobby so special.Last summer when we were camping in the national parks, there were many campsites where we had no cell phone service.

I am not complaining about that, but our work around to communicate back home to the XYL often required a trip to the pay phone sometimes hard to find. How to get a message through? Could I use a similar setup to provide an HF email option while camping this summer? Everything was still in the box. ICOM fixed it and returned it.

I kept it in the box and it went back on the shelf. I did order a 6 pin Molex connector with powerpoles to allow for an easy power connection 9. I connected the two cables from the modem to the rig. I would need one that would function out of the vehicle. This would probably require a laptop. I also decided for the ease of simplicity that the computer should be Windows driven instead of Linux. - linux manpages

The answer ended up being an Dell XPS Neither of these have been a show stopper yet. I had purchased TravelPlus for Repeaters with the intent of installing it on my existing Linux laptop and running it under a VirtualBox Windows session similar to how I run iTunes on my Linux laptop. However the software failed to install. I tried troubleshooting and looking at suggested fixes found on the forum sites but still had no luck. It installed but would not run as well. Dell XPS 15 to the rescue.

I then was able to install TravelPlus over the network and it is working without issue. Following a similar procedure that worked for TravelPlus, I copied the programming software from the install disks to a network drive.

The software installation for the TM-DA worked without a hitch. The error said that I must use the original disk to install. The work around is that you find another Windows computer with a CD drive, load the software CD, then back on the driveless laptop, map the CD drive like you would map a network drive. I installed both. Airmail configures easily. The software has a list of stations offering mailbox services that can be viewed on a propagation chart by frequency and distance.
