This dataset contains a years' worth of historical speed information broken down into six time periods for each day. The data is bi-directional, so gives you the average speed of a road link in both directions. A fleet of vehicles collects the traffic speed data every seconds. The data will be supplied on an annual basis each April, averaging the year's travelling speeds to form a single dataset.
Information about speed limits comes from multiple sources including telematics, accident statistics data and Freedom of Information responses from local authorities on speed limit changes.
This is released as a full supply dataset on a quarterly basis, starting in July The data also allows you to carry out congestion analysis and drive time studies as well as environmental analysis, and planning and development.

This guidance sets out the framework that traffic authorities should follow when setting and reviewing local speed limits. Effective speed management is part of creating a safe road environment which is fit for purpose.
It involves many components designed to work together to require, encourage and help road users to adopt appropriate and safe speeds below the speed limit. As well as being the legal limit, speed limits are a key source of information to road users, particularly as an indicator of the nature and risks posed by that road both to themselves and to all other road users.
They should be seen by drivers as the maximum speed rather than as a target speed at which to drive, irrespective of conditions. It is often not appropriate or safe to drive at the maximum speed limit. These national limits are not, however, appropriate for all roads. The speed limit regime enables traffic authorities to set local speed limits in situations where local needs and conditions suggest a speed limit which is different from the respective national speed limit.
It builds on the responses received to the consultation held by the Department in as well as to an earlier consultation held in It brings together some of the main features of other published guidance on speed limit related issues, including speed-related road traffic regulation and signing, street lighting, traffic calming, speed limits in villages, and 20 mph speed limits and zones.

Please note that all references to legislation within this Circular are references to that legislation as amended. It has been designed to help local authorities assess the full costs and benefits of any proposed schemes and make robust, evidence-based decisions about which limits they put in place. Traffic authorities continue to have the flexibility to set local speed limits that are appropriate for the individual road, reflecting local needs and taking account of all local considerations.
Local speed limits should not be set in isolation, but as part of a package with other measures to manage vehicle speeds and improve road safety. The relationship between speed and likelihood of collision as well as severity of injury is complex, but there is a strong correlation. For typical types of road traffic collisions the risk of death for drivers and pedestrians involved reduces with reduced vehicle speeds and it is particularly important to consider those speeds where the balance tips in favour of survival.
In at least one of these two factors was reported in 12 per cent of all accidents and these accidents accounted for 25 per cent of all fatalities.
Other reported contributory factors such as loss of control or careless, reckless or in a hurry can often be related to excess or inappropriate speed, and even where the contributory factors are unrelated to the vehicle speed, higher speeds will often aggravate the outcome of the collision and injuries. It should be recognised that identification of contributory factors is largely subjective and is not necessarily the result of extensive investigation.
It will help ensure appropriate and consistent speed limits, which will contribute to reducing the number of road deaths, as well as casualties overall; tackling pedestrian and cyclist casualties in towns and cities; improving the safety on rural roads; and reducing variations in safety from area to area and road to road.

The notice says I was going 57kmh in a 50kmh zone, but there wasn't a sign posted speed limit at the start of that road and according to my GPS, the road's speed limit is 60kmh! So is there a way to find out what the exact speed limit is for a particular road in WA?

In fact, if you ask what the speed limit is, the only short and truthful answer is that it depends. Unlike some parts of the world, where the number written on the road sign is the limit and that's that, in the UK the speed limit varies for different vehicles on the same road.
Finding the limit for any one vehicle means considering:. It's often called "the National Speed Limit", but there's actually more than one of them. They apply to roads without a specific signposted limit. The 60 and 70 limits are often referred to as being "derestricted" for historical reasons — once upon a time, where 60 and 70 now apply, there would have been no speed limit at all. That could mean that a road lined with houses but without streetlights could be derestricted, while a rural road with streetlights could have a 30mph limit.
In place of the National Speed Limit, any individual section of road may have its own local limit applied to it. With an appropriate legal order and suitable signage, the National Speed Limit is replaced with a limit of 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60mph. Because the National Speed Limit requires motorists to read their surroundings and understand whether a road is subject to a 30, 60 or 70 limit without road signs being present, any limit that differs from those must make itself known.
For that reason, any limit that's applied to a road requires not just signs at the start of the limit, but also regular reminders throughout its length, so that a driver attempting to work out the limit from their surroundings will not be misled. This is the reason for the existence of uniquely British "repeaters" — miniature speed limit signs posted every few hundred metres along mile after mile of road where a specific limit has been imposed.

A local limit can cause a road to have a higher or lower limit than it would otherwise have, though it may not exceed 60 on single carriageways or 70 on dual carriageways.
Adding to this complexity is the fact that there are two kinds of 20mph limit, not one. No repeater signs are considered necessary. Even if a driver assumes they are in a 30 limit from their surroundings, they shouldn't actually be able to exceed 20mph. Some 20 zones do this better than others. In some places, where a 20 zone meets a 20 limit, speed limit signs exist showing "20" on both sides, because the two are technically very different restrictions.
The other consideration is the specific limit that applies to the vehicle in question — and that is no small matter. There are five classes of vehicle for the purpose of speed limits, and each class has four different limits depending on the type of road the vehicle is on. Working out your class limit means knowing which category vehicle you are in and what kind of road you are on. You may wish to pull over and take a break from driving so you can think about it. Unlike National Speed Limits, which only divide roads into three sets, for class limits there is also the extra category of "motorways".
So, the speed limit that applies to a vehicle is either the road speed limit or the vehicle class limit for that type of road — whichever is lower. Drivers of goods vehicles may also need to take into account whether they are in England, Scotland or Wales. Interestingly, it's not possible for some vehicles to reach their maximum legal limit. Goods vehicles are theoretically allowed to travel at 60mph on motorways, but they are also subject to separate European legislation that requires them to have a mechanical limiter fitted, making it impossible for them to exceed 56mph and making 60 an impossible dream.

For the hapless motorist who just wants to know how fast they can drive their car, it's not just the limits themselves that are difficult to work out — the legislation behind them is also hopelessly complex and fragmented.
The various class limits and the default National Speed Limits exist because of a host of laws passed at different times and for different purposes. Amongst many other things, it sets the 30mph limit on restricted roads; it defines a restricted road as being one with a "system of street lighting" that has lamps at most yards apart or, pedantically, m if in Scotland ; it sets out how speed limits are made; it exempts emergency vehicles in certain situations; and — crucially — it makes it an offence to break a speed limit that is set by this or any other legislation.

Otherwise you also could add an answer "look in google maps". Just in case you did not realize: OSM itself collects speed limits usually by adding it to the relevant streets, not by collecting the sign positions.

Search My Stuff What's New 3 12 24 How to find out the speed limit of a road? I have received a speeding letter asking me if I was riding at the time and place etc. It tells me what speed I was allegedly doing but not the speed limit.
I've checked the location the letter states on google street view and it looks like the road at that location is a national speed limit road although that might be out of date now I know some roads in that area have changed to 50 zones recently.

Quoted from speedlimit. The entry to a 30 mph zone must be marked by a "30" sign on both sides of the road, but no repeater signs are permitted within the zone on the grounds that they might be confusing if some roads had them and others didn't.
In some circumstances, where a side road has a lower limit than the main road, only one speed limit sign for the lower limit is needed, on the left-hand side of the road, and no signs at all are needed for the higher limit if there are repeater signs on the main road indicating the limit within yards of the junction.
